Laura Donkers - ecological artist

Laura Donkers’ practice conveys mutuality, like-mindedness, and kinship, through an art form that engages the environment, human interaction, and the social context. This process of performativity acts in spaces of the everyday to deliver transformative ‘doings’ (activities, actions, events, responsibilities, deeds, undertakings, accomplishments, feats) following verbal and non-verbal negotiations with the personal, social and political realm of the individual and collective.

As a research-led artist with an expanded drawing practice, she is concerned with the current ecological crisis and draws from knowledges accumulated through lived experience to help regenerate ecological responsibility. She develops artistic eco-social engagements through public workshops that collaborate with the embodied, practical knowledges of situated communities. This approach uses ecological and social methods, to co-create sustainable, meaningful futures through projects that promote interconnectedness across human and nonhuman realms.

Place-based research, apprehends the environments and communities who dwell there. Field research methods are deployed - drawing, field-walking, and digital recording - to collect primary observations that trigger 'moments of connection', presenting experiences of living “first hand”, in touch with the environment, community, and self.  From this situated position, a durational method of observing and listening to people, place, and environment intersects with environmental attitudes, activism, and policy to present poietic insights on nature, culture, and ethics.
